Art of Birdie was commissioned as the Artist in Residence for Mela 2024, Scotland's largest free multicultural festival. Our team was tasked with bringing the festival's vibrant spirit to life through visual storytelling, celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures that make Scotland's multicultural landscape unique.
The Challenge
Our challenge was to create a cohesive visual narrative that could capture the essence of this joyous event, representing the diversity of cultures and experiences present at the Mela. We needed to produce work that was both evocative and accessible, appealing to a wide audience while staying true to the authentic spirit of the festival.
Our Approach
We developed a multi-faceted approach to visual storytelling:
Crafted an evocative photo story, documenting the energy, color, and human connections at the heart of the Mela.
Created a series of captivating illustrations that highlight key aspects of the festival, from traditional performances to modern fusion acts.
Developed a visual style that blends photography and illustration, creating a unique aesthetic for the Mela 2024.
Collaborated closely with festival organizers and community representatives to ensure authentic representation of all participating cultures.
Designed adaptable visual elements that could be used across various platforms, from large-scale festival installations to social media content.
The Impact
Our work as Artist in Residence for Glasgow Mela 2024 has significantly contributed to the festival's visual identity and public engagement. The photo story and illustrations have been widely shared, increasing visibility for the event and attracting a diverse audience. Our visuals have helped to communicate the Mela's message of cultural celebration and unity, fostering a sense of community and shared experience among attendees and beyond.
