Role
Lead Visual Designer
At Art of Birdie, we spearheaded the visual design for an innovative anti-racism education initiative with the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow. Our team created an engaging 'Make Your Own Anti-Racist Hero' card game for children aged 6-12, complemented by an interactive heritage trail with 6 stops around Glasgow City Centre.
The Challenge
Our task was to create visually appealing and age-appropriate materials that could effectively communicate complex ideas about racism and inclusion to young children. We needed to strike a balance between education and engagement, ensuring that the resources were both informative and fun to use.
Our Approach
We developed a multi-faceted design approach:
Designed and illustrated 10 diverse characters for the 'Make Your Own Anti-Racist Hero' card game, ensuring representation of various ethnicities, abilities, and backgrounds.
Created an visually cohesive and interactive heritage trail, with distinctive designs for each of the 6 stops in Glasgow City Centre.
Collaborated closely with a team of writers to ensure that the visual elements complemented and enhanced the educational content.
Developed a bright, inclusive color palette and a friendly illustration style that appeals to children while respectfully addressing serious topics.
Designed additional supporting materials, including worksheets, posters, and digital resources, to create a comprehensive anti-racism education package.
The Impact
The Create Space Project has been warmly received by educators, parents, and children alike. Our visuals have helped make anti-racism education more accessible and engaging for young learners, fostering understanding and inclusion from an early age. The project has been implemented in schools across Glasgow and has potential for wider adoption. As the project continues to evolve, we're excited to develop more resources that will contribute to building a more inclusive society.
