Admitting Women - Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow

Project Type

Visual Storytelling

Date

2024

At Art of Birdie, we were commissioned to create visuals for the "Admitting Women" project, a groundbreaking exhibition exploring gender inequality in the medical profession. Our task was to bring to life the stories of pioneering women in medicine, with a focus on Jamini Sen and other remarkable practitioners from the 19th century onwards.

The Challenge
Our challenge was to translate extensive historical research into compelling visual narratives that could effectively communicate the struggles and achievements of women in medicine. We needed to create artwork that not only informed but also emotionally engaged visitors, contributing to a broader understanding of these women's impact on medical history and the ongoing fight for gender equality in healthcare.

Our Approach
We immersed ourselves in the research, working closely with historians and the Royal College to ensure historical accuracy. Our visual approach combined period-appropriate aesthetics with contemporary storytelling techniques to make the content relatable to modern audiences. We created a series of illustrated portraits, infographics, and narrative scenes that highlighted key moments and figures in the journey of women in medicine.

The Impact
Our visuals have become an integral part of this research-based exhibition, helping to shed light on a often-overlooked aspect of medical history. By visually capturing the challenges and triumphs of women like Jamini Sen, we've contributed to a more inclusive narrative of medical progress. The exhibition has garnered significant interest, promoting discussions about gender equality in healthcare and inspiring a new generation of medical practitioners.
